The writer should be able to pitch and produce stories for the newsletter and social media channels, while embodying Spinning Forward's approach to storytelling by focusing on relevant and resonating news stories for their Gen Z and Millennial readership. Additionally, the goal is to find a writer who is curious, committed to improving their writing skills, and passionate about issues of equity, diversity, and financial inclusion.
You do not need formal journalism experience to write for us although a background is journalism is an asset. Instead, you enjoy writing and improving.
Writing tasks will involve short, impactful curated updates and also longer 500 to 800 word articles exploring a topic or writing about a content creator. We encourage anyone who can write well and is enthusiastic about diving into the topics we cover to apply.
We cover the online creator economy, and aspiring content creators of color across all social media platforms in the Greater Toronto Area. We do from their an equity and inclusion lens.
What you’ll do:
Pitch and produce stories alongside a senior writer for our newsletter and other content across our social media channels (as required).
Embody Spinning Forward's approach to writing by sifting out the “noise” from the 24-hour news cycle and telling news stories in a way that will resonate most with our readers, who are Gen Z and Millennials.
Bring a curiosity-driven mindset to your work.
One day you might be learning about a personal finance creator and the next you'll be covering how AI is changing how creators do what they do.
The supervisor will provide guidance, training, and feedback to support students in completing their assigned tasks and projects. They will offer clear instructions and resources, helping students understand the expectations and develop their hard skills. The mentor will regularly review their work, provide constructive feedback, and assist in problem-solving. They will foster collaboration, offer career advice, and motivate students, creating a supportive environment that promotes personal and professional growth throughout the internship.

About the company
Spinning Forward is Toronto’s only independent local media outlet focused on amplifying the voices of content creators of color, aged 16 to 34 years old. ✊🏽🎤 As a social impact organization, our stories include articles, short and long-form videos about how young people navigate issues they care about in real life and online. 🌍📱
